special note don't leave your 12 in the heat, above 90degrees for extended periods, tends to melt the glue holding your bridge.... |

"Your musical tuning guidance is fine, but your grammar needs some tuning. "It's" is only used as a contraction for "it is" or "it has". Otherwise use "Its"(possessive pronoun)."
OMG GRAMMAR POLICE! |

First of all thanks for the great info and tools on this site. Now for my dumb question. :O)
I've seen a number of sites teaching you how to tune a 12 string by ear but none using a tuner. It is easy enough to tune the strings to the standard tuning but I have no idea how to tune up the other strings one octave with my tuner. (My tuner is a quartz meter tuner.)
Any tips? |

brilliant experience from this page, plus if you know your guitars or not you'll feel with the tuition on hand it wont be long b4 you master it in all aspects.. so the site gets thumbs up from me!!! |

I own a Martin 12-28 12 string, I have had no problem tuning it. I use a Korg GT-12 electronic tuner. The Martin scale length is slightly shorter (24.5) to cope with the tension of the strings and therefore does not have to be tuned down 1 or 2 steps to cope with the added tention. I however use slightly heavier strings to provide a better bass response, so I tune down 2 steps as reccomended by an email I received from the CF Martin Company. I also replace the octave a string with a .020 gauge wrapped sting as I feel that it gives a less thinner sound than the plain steel that comes with most 12 string sets.As far as tuning a twelve string guitar or a regular 6 string I would advise investing it a chromatic electronic tuner, it really helps, especially when you have 63 year old ears. |
